Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese technique where you braid many small cords or fibers together to make a thicker, stronger cord. Recently this technique has become very popular by adding beads to the cords. It makes beautiful cords for necklaces and bracelets. You can weave in or add a focal on a slide. This class meets by appointment only on Wednesday afternoons from 12:30 to 3 pm. Beginners will learn the basics and then work into creating patterns with different bead colors and shapes. Class fees are $7.50 per 2 ½ hour sessions and students will need a disk and 8 bobbins which can be purchased from the teacher. Students will be given a list of places where they can purchase their own bead if needed.
Photos show some of the various patterns that can be worked into kumihimo, i.e. spirals, polka dots, graduated fade, and irregular shapes (daggers and bi-cones).
